Work with local veterans

We developed and shared a range of veteran specific information to help improve awareness of health and care support available to veterans and their families across Wakefield District. This follows engagement work carried out in spring 2024, which highlighted that many veterans were unaware of specialist services and unclear about how to access appropriate support.

To support accurate identification and improve access to care, we launched the 'Have you asked?' campaign, encouraging healthcare providers to routinely ask about veteran status during registration and appointments. The campaign included a short awareness video shared ahead of Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, aimed at veterans, the public and health and care staff.

Veteran information has been shared through Primary Care Networks, GP practice communications and Integrated Care Board channels, helping staff better understand veteran pathways and the importance of Veteran Friendly Accreditation. This work has contributed to increased engagement from GP practices and care homes and is supporting improved access to services for veterans across the district.

We will continue to develop and share veteran specific information and work alongside partners to ensure veterans know what support is available and how to access it.
